Ski Town, has upheld that reputation by boasting the oldest Colorado Resort: Howelesen Hill, named after Carl Howelesen, has produced the most Olympic ski atheltes than any other ski resort in North America. In 1913, this Norwegian introduced ski jumping to Steamboat, and was an Olympic ski jumping champion himself. Familiar names like: Wallace "Buddy" Jerold Werner, Rudi Schnackenberg, J.H Cooper Schell, Billy Winston Kidd, and Maria Quintana, have multiple olympic appearances and winter sports resumes long enough to sled on. They are truly some of the Pioneers that shapped the Yampa valley and made it into Ski Town USA. These Pioneers, really were skiers, but back then, they weren't called skiers. They were called, ranchers, farmers and claim stakers. All who used skis as their way to get around in winter conditions and to do their work .
